The South Eastern Economic Development (SEED) Corporation has selected Heidrea Communications, LLC of Plymouth, Ma. as the “Small Business of the Year” for 2014. The award will be presented at SEED’s 32nd Annual Meeting at 5:30 pm on Thursday, November 20th at White’s of Westport in Westport, Ma.

“We are very pleased to present our Small Business of the Year award to Heidrea Communications LLC, a veteran owned small business which has doubled sales in the last three  years to nearly $8 million, and grown to 43 employees in difficult economic times” stated Maria Gooch-Smith, SEED’s executive director.

“Heidrea Communications provides an excellent example of entrepreneurship, and sound management by two veteran owners,” stated Gooch-Smith. The business was established in 2007 in Plymouth, Ma. by Jesse Brown and Matthew Mastroianni who met after serving in the United State Marine Corps in 2003.

SEED’s Nominating Committee selected Heidrea Communications from a pool of 380 candidates.  SEED’s criteria included enhancement of the region’s economy through job creation, and financial performance.

Heidrea Communications is a general contracting firm specializing in the wireless industry with a focus on tower construction and maintenance throughout New England. Heidrea also offers a full range of construction services ranging from electrical, civil engineering, carpentry, HVAC, and steel fabrication.

Heidrea’s employees are trained professionals with certifications in their respective fields. Their customers include Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, AT&T, Crown Castle, Inc., American Tower, and SBA Networks. In addition to the headquarters in Plymouth, the company also has offices and a warehouse in Mendon, Ma., and a warehouse in Bellingham, Ma.

In 2012, SEED provided Heidrea Communications with a $466,000 loan under the SBA 504 Program in conjunction with financing from Bristol County Savings Bank for the purchase of their leased 12,000 square foot warehouse on 6.5 acres of land in Bellingham, Ma.,which enabled the small business to continue growing and creating jobs.

The “Gus Yankopoulos Regional Business Advocate of the Year” award will be presented to Melinda Ailes, the retiring regional director of the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center located in Fall River, Ma. for her contribution to the region’s small businesses in the last 12 years.

SEED will also present the “Banker of the Year” award to the lender in the region who has participated in the largest amount of loans with SEED, and exemplifies the spirit of assistance to small businesses.

The guest speaker at SEED’s Annual Meeting is Seth Goodall, the New England Regional Administrator for the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

At the meeting, SEED members will vote on a slate for officers, directors and members for 2015. The slate for SEED Officers includes: Gerard Nadeau, Chair (Rockland Trust Company); Richard Shafer, Vice Chair (Taunton Development Corporation); Jennifer Menard, Vice Chair (Bristol Community College); Lorraine Travers, CPA, Treasurer; Robert Reisner, Assistant Treasurer (Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank); William Lewis,Clerk (Bristol County Savings Bank); Roy Nascimento, Assistant Clerk (New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce); and Ferdinand Kelley, Past Chair.

In 2014, under all its programs, SEED made 79 small business loans totaling $21.3 million, leveraging $32.3 million in bank loans and private funds, and creating 370 new jobs,” explained Gooch-Smith.  She added that SEED’s total current active portfolio of small business loans is $107 million.

SEED is a non-profit corporation certified in late 1982 by the SBA.  SEED runs three loan programs and a Business Assistance Program.  The loan programs provide financing from $1,000 to $5.5 million to small businesses in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
